After the eruption subsided, some people drifted back to town in search of lost relatives or belongings, but there was not much left to find. Pompeii, along with the smaller neighboring towns of Stabiae and Herculaneum, was abandoned for centuries.
The city of Pompeii was buried. People eventually forgot about it. It wasn't discovered again until the 1700s when archeologists began to uncover the city.
The archaeologists found something amazing. Much of the city was preserved under the ashes. Buildings, paintings, houses, and workshops that would never have survived all these years remained intact. The archaeologists even found preserved bodies that were paralyzed by the lava. as a result, much of what we know about the Roman Empire is from the archeological investigation of Pompeii.
